Award is in the sights of eye expert who helps the vulnerable

Optician of the Year Award 2012

AN OPTICIAN’S extra efforts to care for people with learning disabilities have been recognised. Julian Berson was named Optician of the Year in the YEP Best of Health Awards.

The category, sponsored by Sovereign Health Care, aimed to find the region’s top eye expert.

The winner was Julian, who runs Julian Berson Opticians located in Roundhay, North Leeds, who was said to have a “lovely manner” when looking after people with learning disabilities.

He was praised by the judges for his extra efforts to care for people with these difficulties.

The panel were impressed that he visits clients in their own homes and often picks up on undiagnosed eye problems with one of his patients being delighted to see again after a cataract operation. They said they admired his efforts to help vulnerable people and the judgement he must use to treat those who may struggle to communicate their feelings.

Julian told guests at the awards that he wanted to make an effort to look after this group of people because he feared nobody else would.

“I just find it very satisfying,” he said. He told the YEP: “I am just amazed. I just do what I do because I love people.”

“I care about these vulnerable people with learning disabilities and want to do things that perhaps some haven’t got time for.”
